The little potato that could.

After 11 weeks in camp, time to do some fishing.....A special Father's Day trip to Crawling Valley Reservoir.

Today Kevin "Spud" and I Made the Hour and a half drive from SE Calgary to the popular reservoir between Calgary and Medicine Hat. Loaded up and on the road by 6:30, we both slept very little the night before in anticipation of our first outing of the new season. We were joined by Spud's current billet Tyson, Captain of the Spokane Chiefs.

A peaceful cool morning greeted us at the marina. Very few people were around and only a few boats were on the water. The lake was calm and the fish were biting right out of the marina. We were trolling a 5 of diamonds spoon, Rapala Shad Rap and I had on a yellow Lindi rig with a worm. We all started hitting small pike and walleye right off the bat.
As the sun came up and the water started to warm up so we moved up the reservoir to some deeper water. Spud changed up his rig to a pink and purple Lindi rig and right away things started to pick up.

"I think this one's got some weight"
WOOGAA! Spud's biggest CVR Walleye. I'm thinking "Ya even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once and a while"

Nope he's not a one trick pony, less than 20 minutes later up comes a bigger one.
And then another....
This pattern continued on through out the day with steady action of walleyes with the odd pike.  All three of us had some amazing battles with some truly great fish.

We stopped for lunch at the boat launch and grilled up a few smokies while we contemplated our next target area. Loading up to head out we got a visit from the local RCMP inspecting safety devices and competency cards for the operators. Refreshing to see and we were happy to go over our safety devices and take some advise on improving out set up.
Afternoon brought a return to some red hot fishing.  Without skipping a beat we were hitting good size walleye in deep water. Tyson brought in some nice fish in spite of his hand being in a cast.

The afternoon was fish after fish of all sizes. It's really nice to see such a diverse and healthy walleye population. I hope to see a tag system on CVR in the near future if stock numbers continue on it's current path. The only thing missing from this perfect Father's day was a shore lunch walleye fry with our Kyle's.
